Croatian · Verb Tables · Advanced
jesti / pojesti means "to eat" in Croatian. Present: ja jedem, ti jedeš, on / ona / ono jede, mi jedemo, vi jedete, oni / one / ona jedu. Below: all 27 tenses we teach, with examples.
Stem + personal ending (-im, -am, -em, -ujem). Only imperfective verbs have a true present, covering both 'I work' and 'I am working' (Croatian has no separate present continuous). The present of a perfective verb (napravim) does not mean 'now': it appears after da, kad, ako and in the Future II sense.
| ja | jedem |
| ti | jedeš |
| on / ona / ono | jede |
| mi | jedemo |
| vi | jedete |
| oni / one / ona | jedu |
The everyday past: present of 'biti' (sam, si, je...) as a clitic + l-participle, which agrees in gender and number. The imperfective verb describes an ongoing, repeated or unfinished past action. The clitic stands in second position: 'Radio sam' or 'Ja sam radio'. The 3rd person je is dropped in negatives only in writing styles, not in standard speech.
| ja | jeo / jela sam |
| ti | jeo / jela si |
| on / ona / ono | jeo / jela / jelo je |
| mi | jeli / jele smo |
| vi | jeli / jele ste |
| oni / one / ona | jeli / jele su |
The same form built from the perfective partner (napravio, pročitao, napisao, kupio). It presents the action as completed, with a result.
| ja | pojeo / pojela sam |
| ti | pojeo / pojela si |
| on / ona / ono | pojeo / pojela / pojelo je |
| mi | pojeli / pojele smo |
| vi | pojeli / pojele ste |

Literary and archaic in standard Croatian; found in older prose, storytelling imitation and some dialects (Čakavian, Kajkavian). Imperfective verbs only: it describes a past process or habit. Stem + -ah/-aše/-ahu (verbs in -iti: -ijah/-ijaše; -ati: -ah/-aše).

| ti | jeđaše |
| on / ona / ono | jeđaše |

| on / ona / ono | pojede |

Infinitive + clitic ću/ćeš/će/ćemo/ćete/će. The final -i of the infinitive is dropped when the clitic follows directly: 'radit ću' (written apart). In a question or with the clitic first the full infinitive stays: 'Ću li raditi?', 'Što ću raditi?'. Standard Croatian prefers 'radit ću' over Serbian 'radiću'.

| ti | jest ćeš |
| on / ona / ono | jest će |

| on / ona / ono | pojest će |
| mi | pojest ćemo |
| vi | pojest ćete |

| on / ona / ono | bude jeo / jela / jelo |
| mi | budemo jeli / jele |
| vi | budete jeli / jele |
| oni / one / ona | budu jeli / jele |
L-participle + aorist of 'biti': bih, bi, bi, bismo, biste, bi. The clitic follows the first stress group: 'Radio bih'. Expresses wishes, polite requests and unreal present or future conditions (with da/kad/ako + conditional).
| ja | jeo / jela bih |
| ti | jeo / jela bi |
| on / ona / ono | jeo / jela / jelo bi |
| mi | jeli / jele bismo |
| vi | jeli / jele biste |
| oni / one / ona | jeli / jele bi |
Conditional of biti (bio bih) + l-participle: unreal past situation, 'would have'. In everyday speech Conditional I often replaces it.
| ja | bio / bila bih jeo / jela |
| ti | bio / bila bi jeo / jela |
| on / ona / ono | bio / bila / bilo bi jeo / jela / jelo |
| mi | bili / bile bismo jeli / jele |
| vi | bili / bile biste jeli / jele |
| oni / one / ona | bili / bile bi jeli / jele |
Croatian has no true subjunctive; the meaning of a subjunctive is carried by da + present (verb in the present form), the conditional and the imperative with neka. Da + present follows verbs of wanting, demanding, fearing and purpose (htjeti, tražiti, bojati se, kako bi/da bi), in impersonal phrases (potrebno je da, važno je da) and after čim, prije nego što (with perfective). In standard Croatian the infinitive is preferred when the subject is the same: 'Želim raditi', not 'Želim da radim'.

| on / ona / ono | da jede |
| mi | da jedemo |
| vi | da jedete |
| oni / one / ona | da jedu |

| on / ona / ono | neka jede |
| mi | jedimo |
| vi | jedite |
| oni / one / ona | neka jedu |

| on / ona / ono | neka ne jede |
| mi | nemojmo jesti |
| vi | nemojte jesti |
