Betalen Conjugation

betalen means "to to pay" in Dutch. Simplest present: ik ik betaal, jij / je jij betaalt, u u betaalt, hij / zij / het hij / zij / het betaalt, wij wij betalen, jullie jullie betalen. Below: all 3 tenses we teach, with examples.

Simplest present Onvoltooid tegenwoordige tijd

Stem alone for ik, stem + -t for jij / u / hij / zij / het, and the infinitive (-en) form for all plurals. Used for what is happening now, general facts, and (with a time word) the near future.

ikik betaal
jij / jejij betaalt
uu betaalt
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het betaalt
wijwij betalen
julliejullie betalen
zijzij betalen

Simplest past Voltooid tegenwoordige tijd

The everyday past is heb/ben (present tense) + past participle at the end of the sentence: ik heb gewerkt (I worked / I have worked). Werken uses hebben; its participle is gewerkt. There is also a simple past (ik werkte, jij werkte...), common in writing and with a few frequent verbs, but in speech people almost always use the heb/ben + participle form.

ikik heb betaald
jij / jejij hebt betaald
uu hebt / heeft betaald
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het heeft betaald
wijwij hebben betaald
julliejullie hebben betaald
zijzij hebben betaald

Simplest future Toekomende tijd (gaan + infinitief)

The simplest future uses a present-tense form of gaan (to go) plus the infinitive at the end: ik ga werken (I'm going to work). Zullen + infinitive (ik zal werken) is also used, especially for promises, offers and predictions.

ikik ga betalen
jij / jejij gaat betalen
uu gaat betalen
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het gaat betalen
wijwij gaan betalen
julliejullie gaan betalen
zijzij gaan betalen
