Horen Conjugation

horen means "to to hear" in Dutch. Present: ik ik hoor, jij / je jij hoort, u u hoort, hij / zij / het hij / zij / het hoort, wij / we wij horen, jullie jullie horen. Below: all 10 tenses we teach, with examples.

Present Onvoltooid tegenwoordige tijd

Stem alone for ik, stem + -t for jij / u / hij / zij / het, and the -en infinitive form for all plurals. Used for what is happening now, general facts, and (with a time word) the near future. When jij is inverted after the verb in a question, drop the -t: "Werk jij hier?" but "Werkt u hier?" stays with the -t.

ikik hoor
jij / jejij hoort
uu hoort
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het hoort
wij / wewij horen
julliejullie horen
zij / zezij horen

Imperfect (simple past) Onvoltooid verleden tijd

Weak verbs add -te (after a 't kofschip consonant: t, k, f, s, ch, p) or -de (otherwise) to the stem, with -n added in the plural: werk- -> werkte/werkten, but speel- -> speelde/speelden. Used mainly in writing and with very frequent verbs (was, had, kon, wilde); in speech the present perfect below is far more common for everyday past narration.

ikik hoorde
jij / jejij hoorde
uu hoorde
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het hoorde
wij / wewij hoorden
julliejullie hoorden
zij / zezij hoorden

Present perfect Voltooid tegenwoordige tijd

The everyday past: a present-tense form of hebben or zijn + past participle at the end of the clause. Werken takes hebben; its participle is gewerkt (ge- + stem + -t, following 't kofschip). This is the normal way to talk about the past in speech.

ikik heb gehoord
jij / jejij hebt gehoord
uu hebt / heeft gehoord
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het heeft gehoord
wij / wewij hebben gehoord
julliejullie hebben gehoord
zij / zezij hebben gehoord

Pluperfect Voltooid verleden tijd

The past-tense form of hebben or zijn (had/was) + past participle, for something that had already happened before another past moment.

ikik had gehoord
jij / jejij had gehoord
uu had gehoord
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het had gehoord
wij / wewij hadden gehoord
julliejullie hadden gehoord
zij / zezij hadden gehoord

Near future Naaste toekomende tijd (gaan + infinitief)

The everyday, colloquial future: a present-tense form of gaan (to go) + infinitive at the end. Used for plans and near-certain future events, much like English "going to".

ikik ga horen
jij / jejij gaat horen
uu gaat horen
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het gaat horen
wij / wewij gaan horen
julliejullie gaan horen
zij / zezij gaan horen

Simple future Onvoltooid toekomende tijd (zullen + infinitief)

zullen + infinitive at the end, more formal than gaan + infinitive and preferred for promises, offers and predictions.

ikik zal horen
jij / jejij zult / zal horen
uu zult horen
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het zal horen
wij / wewij zullen horen
julliejullie zullen horen
zij / zezij zullen horen

Future perfect Voltooid toekomende tijd

zullen + hebben/zijn + past participle, for something that will already be finished by a future point.

ikik zal hebben gehoord
jij / jejij zult / zal hebben gehoord
uu zult hebben gehoord
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het zal hebben gehoord
wij / wewij zullen hebben gehoord
julliejullie zullen hebben gehoord
zij / zezij zullen hebben gehoord

Conditional Voorwaardelijke wijs (zou + infinitief)

zou(den) + infinitive, for hypothetical or polite statements; the if-clause of a hypothetical sentence uses the ordinary imperfect, not a special mood (Als ik meer geld had, zou ik verhuizen). Modern Dutch has no living subjunctive: wishes use mogen or laten (Moge het goed gaan; Laten we hopen), and a few frozen phrases keep an old form (Het zij zo, God hebbe zijn ziel).

ikik zou horen
jij / jejij zou horen
uu zou horen
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het zou horen
wij / wewij zouden horen
julliejullie zouden horen
zij / zezij zouden horen

Conditional perfect Voltooid voorwaardelijke wijs

zou(den) + hebben/zijn + past participle, for something that would have happened under different circumstances.

ikik zou hebben gehoord
jij / jejij zou hebben gehoord
uu zou hebben gehoord
hij / zij / hethij / zij / het zou hebben gehoord
wij / wewij zouden hebben gehoord
julliejullie zouden hebben gehoord
zij / zezij zouden hebben gehoord

Affirmative Gebiedende wijs (bevestigend)

The bare stem serves as the imperative for both one person and several addressed informally (Werk!); u adds -t, same as the present tense (Werkt u!). There is no true first- or third-person imperative - "let's" uses laten we + infinitive, and "let him/them" uses laat + subject + infinitive. To say "don't", add niet after the verb (Werk niet! Wees niet bang!). There is no first-person form: use laten we... for "let's".

ik—
jij / jehoor!
uhoort u!
hij / zij / hetlaat hem / haar horen
wij / welaten we horen!
julliehoor!
zij / zelaat hen / ze horen
