Zijn Conjugation

zijn means "to be" in Dutch. Present: ik ben, jij / je bent, u bent, hij / zij / het is, wij / we zijn, jullie zijn. Below: all 16 tenses we teach, with examples.

Present Onvoltooid tegenwoordige tijd (o.t.t.)

Stem (infinitive minus -en) for ik; stem + -t for jij, u, hij; -en in the plural. After inversion the -t of jij is dropped (werk jij?). Used for now, habits, general truths and, very often, for the near future.

ikben
jij / jebent
ubent
hij / zij / hetis
wij / wezijn
julliezijn
zij / zezijn

Simple past Onvoltooid verleden tijd (o.v.t.)

Weak verbs add -te/-de (-ten/-den in the plural) to the stem, chosen by 't kofschip; strong verbs change the stem vowel and take no ending in the singular. Used for narration and for completed actions told as a story, especially in writing.

ikwas
jij / jewas
uwas
hij / zij / hetwas
wij / wewaren
julliewaren
zij / zewaren

Present perfect Voltooid tegenwoordige tijd (v.t.t.)

Hebben or zijn in the present + past participle at the end of the clause. Zijn is used with verbs of change of place or state (ben gegaan, is gebleven) and hebben with most others; lopen takes hebben for the activity (ik heb een uur gelopen) and zijn for movement to a goal (ik ben naar huis gelopen). The usual past tense in conversation.

ikben geweest
jij / jebent geweest
ubent geweest
hij / zij / hetis geweest
wij / wezijn geweest
julliezijn geweest
zij / zezijn geweest

Past perfect Voltooid verleden tijd (v.v.t.)

Had/was + past participle; an action completed before another past moment. Same hebben/zijn choice as in the perfect.

ikwas geweest
jij / jewas geweest
uwas geweest
hij / zij / hetwas geweest
wij / wewaren geweest
julliewaren geweest
zij / zewaren geweest

Future Onvoltooid toekomende tijd (o.t.t.)

Zullen + infinitive at the end of the clause. Jij zult is standard; jij zal is very common in speech. It often expresses assumption (dat zal wel) more than plain future; the present tense is the everyday way to refer to the future.

ikzal zijn
jij / jezult zijn
uzult zijn
hij / zij / hetzal zijn
wij / wezullen zijn
julliezullen zijn
zij / zezullen zijn

Near future with gaan Gaan-toekomst

Gaan + infinitive; a planned or imminent action, the most common spoken future. Not used for the verb gaan itself in the same way (je gaat gaan sounds clumsy).

ikga zijn
jij / jegaat zijn
ugaat zijn
hij / zij / hetgaat zijn
wij / wegaan zijn
julliegaan zijn
zij / zegaan zijn

Future perfect Voltooid toekomende tijd (v.t.t.)

Zullen + hebben/zijn + past participle; an action that will be completed by a future moment, or a probable inference about the past (hij zal wel gewerkt hebben). Formal in tone.

ikzal zijn geweest
jij / jezult zijn geweest
uzult zijn geweest
hij / zij / hetzal zijn geweest
wij / wezullen zijn geweest
julliezullen zijn geweest
zij / zezullen zijn geweest

Conditional / past future Onvoltooid verleden toekomende tijd; conditionalis

Zou/zouden + infinitive. Used for hypotheses, polite requests and reported future from a past viewpoint (hij zei dat hij zou komen), so the "past future" and the conditional share one form.

ikzou zijn
jij / jezou zijn
uzou zijn
hij / zij / hetzou zijn
wij / wezouden zijn
julliezouden zijn
zij / zezouden zijn

Conditional perfect / future perfect in the past Voltooid verleden toekomende tijd

Zou/zouden + hebben/zijn + past participle; an unreal past (als ik had gewerkt, zou ik het hebben gehaald) and the past-viewpoint equivalent of the future perfect. In speech zou gewerkt hebben is equally common.

ikzou zijn geweest
jij / jezou zijn geweest
uzou zijn geweest
hij / zij / hetzou zijn geweest
wij / wezouden zijn geweest
julliezouden zijn geweest
zij / zezouden zijn geweest

Affirmative imperative Gebiedende wijs, bevestigend

Bare stem for jij (werk!). The polite u form is stem + -t with u after it (werkt u!, komt u binnen); jullie takes stem + -t. No first-person-singular imperative exists; we-hortative uses laten we. A Stems ending in -t keep it (wacht u!).

ik—
jij / jewees
uweest u
hij / zij / het—
wij / welaten we zijn
jullieweest
zij / ze—

Negative imperative Gebiedende wijs, ontkennend

Same forms with niet after the verb. Signs and general prohibitions use the infinitive instead (niet roken, niet lopen).

ik—
jij / jewees niet
uweest u niet
hij / zij / het—
wij / welaten we niet zijn
jullieweest niet
zij / ze—

Infinitive Onbepaalde wijs (infinitief)

Stem + -en (or -n after vowels). Also the dictionary form; after most modals it stands without te.

zijn

Infinitive with te Te-infinitief

Te + infinitive after many verbs and adjectives (proberen, beginnen, hoeven, zonder, om); the pre-verb form is aan het for progressive and om ... te for purpose.

te zijn

Present participle Tegenwoordig deelwoord

Infinitive + -d (werkend, lopend); mostly adjectival or adverbial and rather written (de werkende bevolking, lachend zei hij).

zijnde

Past participle Voltooid deelwoord

Ge- + stem + -t/-d for weak verbs (gewerkt, gewoond), ge- + changed stem + -en for strong verbs (gelopen). The ge- is dropped with inseparable prefixes (beginnen > begonnen).

geweest

Nominalised infinitive Zelfstandig gebruikt infinitief

Het + infinitive acts as a neuter noun (het werken, het wonen, het lopen).

het zijn
