Kuulla Conjugation

kuulla means "to hear" in Finnish. Present: minä kuulen, sinä kuulet, hän kuulee, me kuulemme, te kuulette, he kuulevat. Below: all 10 tenses we teach, with examples.

Present Preesens

Verb stem + personal ending: -n, -t, nothing/long vowel, -mme, -tte, -vat/-vät. Consonant gradation changes the stem in some persons (luen but lukee). Also used for the future: Finnish has no future tense.

minäkuulen
sinäkuulet
hänkuulee
mekuulemme
tekuulette
hekuulevat

Present Negative Preesens (kielteinen)

The negative verb en, et, ei, emme, ette, eivät (it changes by person) + the bare verb stem, which never takes a personal ending. Use it for "do not" and "am not".

minäen kuule
sinäet kuule
hänei kuule
meemme kuule
teette kuule
heeivät kuule

Simple Past Imperfekti

Stem + -i- + personal ending (puhuin, söin, tulin). Used for finished events in the past, for repeated past habits and for background; Finnish has one simple past for all of this.

minäkuulin
sinäkuulit
hänkuuli
mekuulimme
tekuulitte
hekuulivat

Past Negative Imperfekti (kielteinen)

The negative verb en, et, ei... + the -nut/-nyt participle (singular) or -neet (plural). The ending of the participle shows the number of the subject, the negative verb shows the person.

minäen kuullut
sinäet kuullut
hänei kuullut
meemme kuulleet
teette kuulleet
heeivät kuulleet

Present Perfect Perfekti

Present of olla (be) + the -nut/-nyt participle (-neet in the plural): olen puhunut, olemme puhuneet. Used for a past event with a link to now or for an unfinished period; the negative is en ole puhunut.

minäolen kuullut
sinäolet kuullut
hänon kuullut
meolemme kuulleet
teolette kuulleet
heovat kuulleet

Pluperfect Pluskvamperfekti

Simple past of olla + the -nut/-nyt participle: olin puhunut. Used for something that had already happened before another past moment.

minäolin kuullut
sinäolit kuullut
hänoli kuullut
meolimme kuulleet
teolitte kuulleet
heolivat kuulleet

Conditional Konditionaali (preesens)

Verb stem + -isi- + personal ending: puhuisin, söisin, tulisin. Used for polite requests ("I would like"), advice, wishes and "if" sentences (jos + conditional in both parts, e.g. jos minulla olisi aikaa, tulisin).

minäkuulisin
sinäkuulisit
hänkuulisi
mekuulisimme
tekuulisitte
hekuulisivat

Conditional Perfect Konditionaali (perfekti)

Conditional of olla (olisin) + the -nut/-nyt participle: olisin puhunut. Used for unreal past situations, regrets and "would have" ("if I had known, I would have come").

minäolisin kuullut
sinäolisit kuullut
hänolisi kuullut
meolisimme kuulleet
teolisitte kuulleet
heolisivat kuulleet

Imperative Imperatiivi

The 2nd person singular is the bare stem (puhu!); the plural is stem + -kaa/-kää (puhukaa!); "let us" is stem + -kaamme/-käämme (puhukaamme!). In speech, "let us" is usually the passive form: puhutaan! Third-person forms (puhukoon) exist but are rare, so only sinä, me and te are shown.

sinäkuule
hän—
mekuulkaamme
tekuulkaa
he—

Negative Imperative Imperatiivi (kielteinen)

älä (sinä), älkäämme (me) or älkää (te) + the bare stem (singular) or the stem + -ko/-kö (plural and "let us").

hän—
meälkäämme kuulko
