Spielen Conjugation

spielen means "to to play" in German. Simplest present: ich ich spiele, du du spielst, er / sie / es er / sie / es spielt, wir wir spielen, ihr ihr spielt, sie / Sie sie / Sie spielen. Below: all 4 tenses we teach, with examples.

Simplest present Präsens

Stem + ending: ich spiele, du spielst, er/sie/es spielt, wir spielen, ihr spielt, sie/Sie spielen. Used for what is happening now, habits, and near-future plans with a time word.

ichich spiele
dudu spielst
er / sie / eser / sie / es spielt
wirwir spielen
ihrihr spielt
sie / Siesie / Sie spielen

Simplest past Perfekt

Perfekt: present of 'haben' + past participle 'gespielt' (ge- + stem + -t, since spielen is a regular weak verb). Used for any finished action in conversation: 'I played', 'I lost my passport'.

ichich habe gespielt
dudu hast gespielt
er / sie / eser / sie / es hat gespielt
wirwir haben gespielt
ihrihr habt gespielt
sie / Siesie / Sie haben gespielt

Simplest future Futur I

Futur I: present of 'werden' + infinitive at the end of the clause. Used for plans, promises and predictions: 'I'm going to play'.

ichich werde spielen
dudu wirst spielen
er / sie / eser / sie / es wird spielen
wirwir werden spielen
ihrihr werdet spielen
sie / Siesie / Sie werden spielen

Polite requests / imperative Imperativ

With strangers, put the verb first and 'Sie' right after it, plus 'bitte': 'Spielen Sie bitte...' Softer still: 'Könnten Sie...?' (Could you...?). The du-imperative is the bare stem ('Spiel!'), the ihr-imperative is stem + t ('Spielt!'), and 'spielen wir' means 'let's play'.

er / sie / es(er/sie soll spielen)
