Tun Conjugation

tun means "to do, make" in German. Present: ich ich tue, du du tust, er / sie / es er/sie/es tut, wir wir tun, ihr ihr tut, sie / Sie sie/Sie tun. Below: all 26 tenses we teach, with examples.

Present Präsens

Stem + personal ending (-e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en); used for current actions, general truths and habits, and — with a time expression — as the normal, everyday way to talk about the future.

ichich tue
dudu tust
er / sie / eser/sie/es tut
wirwir tun
ihrihr tut
sie / Siesie/Sie tun

Present continuous (colloquial am-Progressiv) am-Progressiv (umgangssprachlich)

sein + am + nominalized infinitive; a colloquial construction (strongest in western/Rhineland German) that stresses an action in progress right now; not accepted in formal writing, which uses the plain Präsens instead.

ichich bin am Tun
dudu bist am Tun
er / sie / eser/sie/es ist am Tun
wirwir sind am Tun
ihrihr seid am Tun
sie / Siesie/Sie sind am Tun

Simple past (narrative past) Präteritum (Imperfekt)

Stem + -te- + ending for weak verbs; the normal past tense of written narration and formal Standard German; in everyday southern German, Austrian and Swiss speech it survives mainly in sein, haben and the modal verbs, elsewhere replaced by the Perfekt.

ichich tat
dudu tatest
er / sie / eser/sie/es tat
wirwir taten
ihrihr tatet
sie / Siesie/Sie taten

Present perfect (conversational past) Perfekt

haben or sein (present) + past participle; the everyday spoken past tense for completed actions, and also used in writing when the action still matters now.

ichich habe getan
dudu hast getan
er / sie / eser/sie/es hat getan
wirwir haben getan
ihrihr habt getan
sie / Siesie/Sie haben getan

Past perfect Plusquamperfekt

haben or sein (Präteritum) + past participle; an action completed before another past action or moment.

ichich hatte getan
dudu hattest getan
er / sie / eser/sie/es hatte getan
wirwir hatten getan
ihrihr hattet getan
sie / Siesie/Sie hatten getan

Future Futur I

werden (present) + infinitive; expresses future events, and just as often present probability or assumption (er wird wohl zu Hause sein = he's probably home).

ichich werde tun
dudu wirst tun
er / sie / eser/sie/es wird tun
wirwir werden tun
ihrihr werdet tun
sie / Siesie/Sie werden tun

Future perfect Futur II

werden (present) + past participle + haben/sein; a fairly literary tense for an action that will be finished by a future point, though in speech it more often expresses a past assumption (er wird es wohl vergessen haben = he's probably forgotten it).

ichich werde getan haben
dudu wirst getan haben
er / sie / eser/sie/es wird getan haben
wirwir werden getan haben
ihrihr werdet getan haben
sie / Siesie/Sie werden getan haben

Reported present (Konjunktiv I present) Konjunktiv I Präsens

Stem + -e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en; the base form for reporting a present-tense statement without vouching for it.

ichich tue
dudu tuest
er / sie / eser/sie/es tue
wirwir tun
ihrihr tuet
sie / Siesie/Sie tun

Reported past (Konjunktiv I perfect) Konjunktiv I Perfekt

haben/sein (Konjunktiv I) + past participle; reports a statement about the past.

ichich habe getan
dudu habest getan
er / sie / eser/sie/es habe getan
wirwir haben getan
ihrihr habet getan
sie / Siesie/Sie haben getan

Reported future (Konjunktiv I future) Konjunktiv I Futur I

werden (Konjunktiv I) + infinitive; reports a statement about the future.

ichich werde tun
dudu werdest tun
er / sie / eser/sie/es werde tun
wirwir werden tun
ihrihr werdet tun
sie / Siesie/Sie werden tun

Reported future perfect (rare, literary) Konjunktiv I Futur II

werden (Konjunktiv I) + past participle + haben/sein; reports a statement about a completed future event; rare and mostly confined to formal or literary writing.

ichich werde getan haben
dudu werdest getan haben
er / sie / eser/sie/es werde getan haben
wirwir werden getan haben
ihrihr werdet getan haben
sie / Siesie/Sie werden getan haben

Hypothetical present (Konjunktiv II preterite) Konjunktiv II Präteritum

For weak verbs like machen and arbeiten this form is identical to the indicative Präteritum, which is exactly why speakers avoid it and use the würde-form instead; strong verbs add an umlaut where possible (käme, wäre, hätte) and stay distinct. Expresses an unreal or hypothetical present, or a wish.

ichich täte
dudu tätest
er / sie / eser/sie/es täte
wirwir täten
ihrihr tätet
sie / Siesie/Sie täten

Hypothetical past (Konjunktiv II pluperfect) Konjunktiv II Plusquamperfekt

hätte/wäre + past participle; the standard way to express an unreal condition or regret about the past ('would have').

ichich hätte getan
dudu hättest getan
er / sie / eser/sie/es hätte getan
wirwir hätten getan
ihrihr hättet getan
sie / Siesie/Sie hätten getan

Conditional (würde-form) Konditional I (würde-Form)

würde (Konjunktiv II of werden) + infinitive; the everyday substitute for the synthetic Konjunktiv II of weak verbs and of most other verbs; also the standard way to make a polite request.

ichich würde tun
dudu würdest tun
er / sie / eser/sie/es würde tun
wirwir würden tun
ihrihr würdet tun
sie / Siesie/Sie würden tun

Conditional perfect Konditional II

würde + past participle + haben/sein; the periphrastic equivalent of the Konjunktiv II Plusquamperfekt, used less often since the synthetic hatte/wäre-form is already perfectly natural there.

ichich würde getan haben
dudu würdest getan haben
er / sie / eser/sie/es würde getan haben
wirwir würden getan haben
ihrihr würdet getan haben
sie / Siesie/Sie würden getan haben

Imperative Imperativ

du-form = present stem (+ optional -e, usually dropped in speech: Mach(e)!); ihr-form = present tense minus the pronoun (Macht!); Sie-form = infinitive + Sie with inversion (Machen Sie!); the wir-form ('let's...') uses the same inversion (Machen wir!) and is technically a hortative taught alongside the imperative. Negation is not a separate form: it simply adds nicht before the element being negated.

ich—
duTu(e)!
er / sie / es—
wirTun wir!
ihrTut!
sie / SieTun Sie!

Passive present (Vorgangspassiv) Präsens Passiv

werden (present) + past participle; an action being done to the subject right now. Only transitive verbs (and a few verbs with a dative object) form a personal passive; a genuinely intransitive verb like arbeiten only forms an impersonal passive with no real subject (Hier wird gearbeitet = 'There's work going on here'), so it has no personal forms here.

ichich werde getan
dudu wirst getan
er / sie / eser/sie/es wird getan
wirwir werden getan
ihrihr werdet getan
sie / Siesie/Sie werden getan

Passive simple past Präteritum Passiv

werden (Präteritum) + past participle; the narrative past of the passive.

ichich wurde getan
dudu wurdest getan
er / sie / eser/sie/es wurde getan
wirwir wurden getan
ihrihr wurdet getan
sie / Siesie/Sie wurden getan

Passive present perfect Perfekt Passiv

sein (present) + past participle + worden (a special short form of geworden used only in the passive); the conversational past of the passive.

ichich bin getan worden
dudu bist getan worden
er / sie / eser/sie/es ist getan worden
wirwir sind getan worden
ihrihr seid getan worden
sie / Siesie/Sie sind getan worden

Passive past perfect Plusquamperfekt Passiv

sein (Präteritum) + past participle + worden; an action completed, in the passive, before another past moment.

ichich war getan worden
dudu warst getan worden
er / sie / eser/sie/es war getan worden
wirwir waren getan worden
ihrihr wart getan worden
sie / Siesie/Sie waren getan worden

Passive future Futur I Passiv

werden (present) + past participle + werden; a future action seen from the receiver's side.

ichich werde getan werden
dudu wirst getan werden
er / sie / eser/sie/es wird getan werden
wirwir werden getan werden
ihrihr werdet getan werden
sie / Siesie/Sie werden getan werden

Stative passive (resulting state) Zustandspassiv (Präsens)

sein (present) + past participle; describes the state that results from the action, not the action itself — contrast 'Der Kuchen wird gemacht' (someone is making it) with 'Der Kuchen ist gemacht' (it's done now).

ichich bin getan
dudu bist getan
er / sie / eser/sie/es ist getan
wirwir sind getan
ihrihr seid getan
sie / Siesie/Sie sind getan

Infinitive Infinitiv Präsens

The dictionary form, always ending in -en or -n; used after modal verbs, after zu, and as a capitalized verbal noun (das Machen = the making/doing).

tun

Perfect infinitive Infinitiv Perfekt

past participle + haben/sein; used mainly after modal verbs to express a past inference (er muss das gemacht haben = he must have done that).

getan haben

Present participle Partizip I (Partizip Präsens)

stem + -end; used mainly as an adjective (das lachende Kind = the laughing child) or adverbially; unlike English -ing, it is not used to build a progressive tense.

tuend

Past participle Partizip II (Partizip Perfekt)

ge- + stem + -t for weak verbs (no ge- for inseparable-prefix verbs and verbs ending in -ieren); used to build every compound tense and as an adjective or passive participle.

getan

Examples

Ich tue mein Bestes.I'm doing my best.
Das muss sofort getan werden. That has to be done immediately.
