Chayav Conjugation

חייב (chayav) means "to must" in Hebrew. Present (participle): אני (ani) חייב (chayav), אני (ani) חייבת (chayevet), אתה (ata) חייב (chayav), את (at) חייבת (chayevet), הוא (hu) חייב (chayav), היא (hi) חייבת (chayevet). Below: all 4 tenses we teach, with examples.

Present (participle) הווה (hove)

Participle that changes by gender and number only (m. sg., f. sg., m. pl., f. pl.); it covers both 'I write' and 'I am writing'. The subject pronoun shows the person. Pi'el, hif'il and hitpa'el participles start with מ־ (me-, ma-, mi-); nif'al starts with נ־.

Past עבר (avar)

Stem + person endings; 'I' and 'we' have one form for both genders, while 'you' and 'they' still distinguish them (the 'they f.' cell repeats the masculine in everyday speech). It also does the work of the English present perfect and past perfect, often with כבר (already).

Future עתיד (atid)

Person prefix (א, ת, י, נ) + stem, with endings -i (you f.) and -u (plural). Used for plans, promises and requests ('will you write?'). In everyday Hebrew the feminine plurals repeat the masculine plural.

לו or אילו (both mean 'if' for impossible or unlikely things) + the past of 'be' + the present participle. The same form refers to the present ('if I knew') or the past ('if I had known'); כבר or the context shows which. The result clause uses the 'would' form shown above.
