כותב (kotev) means "to to write" in Hebrew. Simplest present: אני (ani) אני כותב (ani kotev), אני (ani) אני כותבת (ani kotevet), אתה (ata) אתה כותב (ata kotev), את (at) את כותבת (at kotevet), הוא (hu) הוא כותב (hu kotev), היא (hi) היא כותבת (hi kotevet). Below: all 4 tenses we teach, with examples.
The present-tense verb form (kotev/kotevet/kotvim/kotvot) is shared by every person of a given gender and number; the separate subject pronoun shows who is doing the action.
| אני (ani) | אני כותב (ani kotev) |
| אני (ani) | אני כותבת (ani kotevet) |
| אתה (ata) | אתה כותב (ata kotev) |

| הם (hem) | הם כותבים (hem kotvim) |
| הן (hen) | הן כותבות (hen kotvot) |
The past tense adds person-marking suffixes directly onto the root; it distinguishes gender for 'you (sg.)' and 'you (pl.)' but not for 'I' or 'we'.

The future tense adds a person-marking prefix (and sometimes a suffix) to the root. In everyday speech the -u plural forms are used for both masculine and feminine, so the 'you pl. (f.)' and 'they (f.)' cells below repeat the masculine-plural form.
| אני (ani) | אני אכתוב (ani echtov) |

Polite requests usually place בבקשה (please) with a future-tense form rather than a blunt command, e.g. 'תכתוב בבקשה' (would you write, please). The true imperative (ktov, kitvi, kitvu) is also common in everyday speech and is not normally used toward 'I', 'he/she' or 'we'.
