Sedersi Conjugation

sedersi means "to sit" in Italian. Present: io mi siedo, tu ti siedi, lui / lei / Lei si siede, noi ci sediamo, voi vi sedete, loro si siedono. Below: all 23 tenses we teach, with examples.

Present Presente

Add the present endings to the stem; used for habitual actions, general truths and (as in English) near-future plans.

iomi siedo
tuti siedi
lui / lei / Leisi siede
noici sediamo
voivi sedete
lorosi siedono

Present continuous Presente progressivo

stare (present) + gerund; stresses that an action is happening right now, more emphatic than the simple present.

iomi sto sedendo
tuti stai sedendo
lui / lei / Leisi sta sedendo
noici stiamo sedendo
voivi state sedendo
lorosi stanno sedendo

Present perfect Passato prossimo

avere/essere (present) + past participle; the everyday spoken past for completed actions, especially in the north.

iomi sono seduto/a

lui / lei / Leisi è seduto/a
noici siamo seduti/e
voivi siete seduti/e
lorosi sono seduti/e

iomi sedevo
tuti sedevi
lui / lei / Leisi sedeva
noici sedevamo
voivi sedevate
lorosi sedevano

Pluperfect Trapassato prossimo

avere/essere (imperfect) + past participle; a past action completed before another past action.

noici eravamo seduti/e
voivi eravate seduti/e
lorosi erano seduti/e

Historical past Passato remoto

Literary/narrative simple past used in writing and, in Tuscany and the South, in speech for the same range as the passato prossimo. Many -ere verbs have alternate short forms (credetti, credette, credettero alongside credei, credé, crederono).

iomi sedetti
tuti sedesti
lui / lei / Leisi sedette
noici sedemmo
voivi sedeste
lorosi sedettero

Literary pluperfect Trapassato remoto

Literary only (marked as such): avere/essere (passato remoto) + past participle, used almost exclusively after quando/dopo che/appena with a passato remoto in the main clause.

iomi fui seduto/a
tuti fosti seduto/a
lui / lei / Leisi fu seduto/a
noici fummo seduti/e
voivi foste seduti/e
lorosi furono seduti/e

Simple future Futuro semplice

Stem drops the infinitive's final vowel (parler-, creder-, dormir-, finir-) before future endings; used for future events and for present probability/guesses.

iomi siederò
tuti siederai
lui / lei / Leisi siederà
noici siederemo
voivi siederete
lorosi siederanno

Future perfect Futuro anteriore

avere/essere (simple future) + past participle; a future action completed before another future point, or past probability ('must have').

tuti sarai seduto/a
lui / lei / Leisi sarà seduto/a
noici saremo seduti/e
voivi sarete seduti/e
lorosi saranno seduti/e

Conditional present Condizionale presente

Same future stem + conditional endings; polite requests, wishes, and the result clause of hypothetical sentences.

iomi siederei
tuti siederesti
lui / lei / Leisi siederebbe
noici siederemmo

avere/essere (conditional present) + past participle; 'would have done', and reported future-in-the-past.

iomi sarei seduto/a
tuti saresti seduto/a
lui / lei / Leisi sarebbe seduto/a
noici saremmo seduti/e
voivi sareste seduti/e
lorosi sarebbero seduti/e

Subjunctive present Congiuntivo presente

Stem + subjunctive endings (all three singular persons look alike, which is why subject pronouns are often kept for clarity); used after present-tense triggers.

iomi sieda
tuti sieda
lui / lei / Leisi sieda
noici sediamo
voivi sediate
lorosi siedano

Subjunctive past Congiuntivo passato

avere/essere (subjunctive present) + past participle; a completed action, still governed by a present-tense trigger.

iomi sia seduto/a

lui / lei / Leisi sia seduto/a
noici siamo seduti/e
voivi siate seduti/e

tuti sedessi
lui / lei / Leisi sedesse
noici sedessimo
voivi sedeste
lorosi sedessero

Subjunctive pluperfect Congiuntivo trapassato

avere/essere (subjunctive imperfect) + past participle; a completed action before a past trigger, and the 'if' clause of unreal past hypotheses.

iomi fossi seduto/a
tuti fossi seduto/a
lui / lei / Leisi fosse seduto/a
noici fossimo seduti/e
voivi foste seduti/e
lorosi fossero seduti/e

Affirmative imperative Imperativo affermativo

No io form; tu takes the present-tense tu form for -are verbs but the present-subjunctive-like ending for -ere/-ire verbs' tu is actually identical to the indicative present except -are verbs use -a; Lei/loro forms borrow the present subjunctive.

io—
tusiediti
lui / lei / Leisi sieda
noisediamoci
voisedetevi
lorosi siedano

Negative imperative Imperativo negativo

For tu, non + infinitive (never non + the affirmative tu form); all other persons simply add non before the same form as the affirmative.

io—
tunon sederti
lui / lei / Leinon si sieda
noinon sediamoci
voinon sedetevi
loronon si siedano
