Polish · Verb Tables · Advanced
śmiać się means "to laugh" in Polish. Present (imperfective): ja śmieję się, ty śmiejesz się, on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) śmieje się, my śmiejemy się, wy (also państwo) śmiejecie się, oni / one śmieją się. Below: all 22 tenses we teach, with examples.
Formed only from imperfective verbs: stem + personal endings. It covers both the simple present and the English present continuous ("I am reading" = czytam), so Polish has no separate continuous tense; the pattern is set by the conjugation class.
| ja | śmieję się |
| ty | śmiejesz się |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | śmieje się |
| my | śmiejemy się |
| wy (also państwo) | śmiejecie się |
| oni / one | śmieją się |
Past stem (infinitive minus -ć, plus -ł-) + gender and number endings; the person is shown by the clitic ending (-em, -eś, -śmy, -ście) which can also attach to a preceding word. Forms are given masculine / feminine (/ neuter in the 3rd singular); plural is virile (men or mixed) / non-virile. It names an ongoing, repeated or background action and also does the work of the imperfect and the past continuous.
| ja | śmiałem się / śmiałam się |
| ty | śmiałeś się / śmiałaś się |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | śmiał się / śmiała się / śmiało się |
| my | śmialiśmy się / śmiałyśmy się |
| wy (also państwo) | śmialiście się / śmiałyście się |
| oni / one | śmiali się / śmiały się |
Same endings as the imperfective past, added to the perfective verb (usually prefixed: prze-czytać, z-robić). It presents the action as one completed whole with a result, and translates the English simple past of a finished action or the present perfect.
| ja | zaśmiałem się / zaśmiałam się |
| ty | zaśmiałeś się / zaśmiałaś się |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | zaśmiał się / zaśmiała się / zaśmiało się |
| my | zaśmialiśmy się / zaśmiałyśmy się |
| wy (also państwo) | zaśmialiście się / zaśmiałyście się |
| oni / one | zaśmiali się / zaśmiały się |
Past form + the past of być (był, była, było): "czytałem był". Archaic and literary; in modern Polish the ordinary past is used with context or with wcześniej / już, and this tense survives only in old texts and some stylised prose.
| ja | śmiałem się był / śmiałam się była |
| ty | śmiałeś się był / śmiałaś się była |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | śmiał się był / śmiała się była / śmiało się było |
| my | śmialiśmy się byli / śmiałyśmy się były |
| wy (also państwo) | śmialiście się byli / śmiałyście się były |
| oni / one | śmiali się byli / śmiały się były |
Future of być + the l-form of the imperfective verb, agreeing in gender and number: "będę czytał / czytała". Used for ongoing or repeated future action. The two compound-future types are interchangeable in meaning; the l-form version is more common in speech with a stated subject.
| ja | będę się śmiał / będę się śmiała |
| ty | będziesz się śmiał / będziesz się śmiała |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | będzie się śmiał / będzie się śmiała / będzie się śmiało |
| my | będziemy się śmiali / będziemy się śmiały |
| wy (also państwo) | będziecie się śmiali / będziecie się śmiały |
| oni / one | będą się śmiali / będą się śmiały |
Future of być + the imperfective infinitive; no gender agreement: "będę czytać". Equivalent to the previous tense and usual when the verb comes first or the speaker is unspecified.
| ja | będę się śmiać |
| ty | będziesz się śmiać |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | będzie się śmiać |
| my | będziemy się śmiać |
| wy (also państwo) | będziecie się śmiać |
| oni / one | będą się śmiać |
Perfective verbs have no present: their present-tense endings give the future, so "przeczytam" means "I will have read / finish reading". Used for single completed future actions, promises and decisions.
| ja | zaśmieję się |
| ty | zaśmiejesz się |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | zaśmieje się |
| my | zaśmiejemy się |
| wy (also państwo) | zaśmiejecie się |
| oni / one | zaśmieją się |
Past l-form + the conditional particle -by with the person clitic (-bym, -byś, -by, -byśmy, -byście, -by); the clitic can detach (ja bym czytał). Used for "would" statements, polite requests, advice and unreal conditions after gdyby; it does not change with time.
| ja | śmiałbym się / śmiałabym się |
| ty | śmiałbyś się / śmiałabyś się |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | śmiałby się / śmiałaby się / śmiałoby się |
| my | śmialibyśmy się / śmiałybyśmy się |
| wy (also państwo) | śmialibyście się / śmiałybyście się |
| oni / one | śmialiby się / śmiałyby się |
The same construction with a perfective verb, for a single completed hypothetical action: "zrobiłbym" = I would do it (once).
| ja | zaśmiałbym się / zaśmiałabym się |
| ty | zaśmiałbyś się / zaśmiałabyś się |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | zaśmiałby się / zaśmiałaby się / zaśmiałoby się |
| my | zaśmialibyśmy się / zaśmiałybyśmy się |
| wy (also państwo) | zaśmialibyście się / zaśmiałybyście się |
| oni / one | zaśmialiby się / zaśmiałyby się |
Conditional of być (byłbym...) + the l-form: "byłbym czytał". Literary and bookish; in speech and ordinary writing the plain conditional with a past marker (wtedy, wczoraj, gdybym był wiedział...) is used instead.
| ja | byłbym się śmiał / byłabym się śmiała |
| ty | byłbyś się śmiał / byłabyś się śmiała |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | byłby się śmiał / byłaby się śmiała / byłoby się śmiało |

| wy (also państwo) | bylibyście się śmiali / byłybyście się śmiały |
| oni / one | byliby się śmiali / byłyby się śmiały |
Conjunction żeby (or formal aby, by) + l-form with the person clitic. Required after verbs of wanting, ordering, asking, advising, and after "in order to" with a different subject; it has one form for all time references.

| ty | żebyś śmiał się / żebyś śmiała się |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | żeby śmiał się / żeby śmiała się / żeby śmiało się |

| wy (also państwo) | żebyście śmiali się / żebyście śmiały się |
| oni / one | żeby śmiali się / żeby śmiały się |
Gdyby (= gdy + by) + l-form, used in the "if" clause of unreal conditions and in the result clause with the plain conditional: "Gdybym był bogaty, kupiłbym dom."
| ja | gdybym śmiał się / gdybym śmiała się |
| ty | gdybyś śmiał się / gdybyś śmiała się |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | gdyby śmiał się / gdyby śmiała się / gdyby śmiało się |

2nd singular = present stem without ending (czytaj, rób, buduj); 1st plural adds -my, 2nd plural -cie. There is no 3rd person: niech + 3rd person present gives "let him / her / them". Imperfective for ongoing, repeated or general commands.

| ty | śmiej się |
| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | niech śmieje się |
| my | śmiejmy się |
| wy (also państwo) | śmiejcie się |

The perfective verb gives a single, one-time command with a result (zrób to = do it now, once). Same endings; 3rd person with niech + perfective present.

| on / ona / ono (also pan / pani) | niech zaśmieje się |
| my | zaśmiejmy się |
