Klast' Conjugation

класть (klast') means "to put" in Russian. Present: я (ya) кладу [kladu], ты (ty) кладёшь [kladyosh'], он / она / оно (on / ona / ono) кладёт [kladyot], мы (my) кладём [kladyom], вы (vy) кладёте [kladyote], они (oni) кладут [kladut]. Below: all 9 tenses we teach, with examples.

Present Настоящее время

Formed from the imperfective present stem plus personal endings (1st or 2nd conjugation). It covers habitual actions, general truths, and actions happening right now; perfective verbs have no present tense at all.

я (ya)кладу [kladu]
ты (ty)кладёшь [kladyosh']
он / она / оно (on / ona / ono)кладёт [kladyot]
мы (my)кладём [kladyom]
вы (vy)кладёте [kladyote]
они (oni)кладут [kladut]

Past (imperfective) Прошедшее время, несовершенный вид

Drop -ть from the infinitive and add -л (masculine), -ла (feminine), -ло (neuter) or -ли (plural), agreeing with the subject's gender and number, never with person. Describes an action that was ongoing, repeated, or habitual in the past, or simply names a past fact without stressing that it was completed — this single form covers what English splits into "simple past" and "was doing."

я (ya)клал / клала [klal / klala]
ты (ty)клал / клала [klal / klala]
он / она / оно (on / ona / ono)клал / клала / клало [klal / klala / klalo]
мы (my)клали [klali]
вы (vy)клали [klali]
они (oni)клали [klali]

Past (perfective) Прошедшее время, совершенный вид

Same -л/-ла/-ло/-ли formation, but on the perfective stem. Presents the action as a single completed event, usually with a result that still matters — this is the form that does the job of English's "present perfect" ("I have read it") as often as its simple past.

я (ya)положил / положила [polozhil / polozhila]
ты (ty)положил / положила [polozhil / polozhila]
он / она / оно (on / ona / ono)положил / положила / положило [polozhil / polozhila / polozhilo]
мы (my)положили [polozhili]
вы (vy)положили [polozhili]
они (oni)положили [polozhili]

Future (imperfective) Будущее время, несовершенный вид (составное)

Compound future: the future of быть (буду, будешь, будет, будем, будете, будут) plus the imperfective infinitive. Used for an action that will be ongoing, repeated, or habitual in the future, without saying whether it will be finished.

я (ya)буду класть [budu klast']
ты (ty)будешь класть [budesh' klast']
он / она / оно (on / ona / ono)будет класть [budet klast']
мы (my)будем класть [budem klast']
вы (vy)будете класть [budete klast']
они (oni)будут класть [budut klast']

Future (perfective) Будущее время, совершенный вид (простое)

Perfective verbs take the same personal endings as the present tense, but on the perfective stem, giving a one-word simple future. Describes a single action that will be completed.

я (ya)положу [polozhu]
ты (ty)положишь [polozhish']
он / она / оно (on / ona / ono)положит [polozhit]
мы (my)положим [polozhim]
вы (vy)положите [polozhite]
они (oni)положат [polozhat]

Conditional Сослагательное наклонение, несовершенный вид

Бы + the imperfective past (-л/-ла/-ло/-ли) form. Used for general or repeated hypotheticals, polite wishes, and requests where completion isn't the point.

я (ya)клал / клала бы [klal / klala by]
ты (ty)клал / клала бы [klal / klala by]
он / она / оно (on / ona / ono)клал / клала / клало бы [klal / klala / klalo by]
мы (my)клали бы [klali by]
вы (vy)клали бы [klali by]
они (oni)клали бы [klali by]

Conditional perfect Сослагательное наклонение, совершенный вид

Бы + the perfective past form. Used for a single hypothetical action seen as completed — the closest match to English's "would have done."

я (ya)положил / положила бы [polozhil / polozhila by]
ты (ty)положил / положила бы [polozhil / polozhila by]
он / она / оно (on / ona / ono)положил / положила / положило бы [polozhil / polozhila / polozhilo by]
мы (my)положили бы [polozhili by]
вы (vy)положили бы [polozhili by]
они (oni)положили бы [polozhili by]

Imperative (affirmative) Повелительное наклонение, утвердительная форма

Ты/вы forms come from the present/future stem plus -й/-йте (or -и/-ите after a consonant cluster); мы uses давай(те) + infinitive or the perfective 1st-plural future; the 3rd persons use пусть + present/future.

я (ya)—
ты (ty)клади [kladi]
он / она / оно (on / ona / ono)пусть кладёт [pust' kladyot]
мы (my)давайте положим [davayte polozhim]
вы (vy)кладите [kladite]
они (oni)пусть кладут [pust' kladut]

Imperative (negative) Повелительное наклонение, отрицательная форма

Не + the same forms, almost always built on the imperfective aspect (не читай, not не прочитай) even when the corresponding affirmative command would be perfective — a perfective negative instead warns against an accidental action (не забудь, "don't forget"), which is a separate, narrower use not covered here.

я (ya)—
ты (ty)не клади [ne kladi]
он / она / оно (on / ona / ono)пусть не кладёт [pust' ne kladyot]
мы (my)давайте не будем класть [davayte ne budem klast']
вы (vy)не кладите [ne kladite]
они (oni)пусть не кладут [pust' ne kladut]
