Greetings. A handshake with eye contact is standard for men and women alike. Close friends and relatives kiss on both cheeks. Greet the eldest person in a group first and use "zoti" or "zonja" (Mr or Mrs) with a surname at the start.
Head gestures are reversed. Traditionally Albanians nod up-and-down for 'no' and shake side-to-side for 'yes' — the opposite of most countries; confirm verbally to avoid confusion.
Hospitality. Albanians are famously hospitable; accepting an offered coffee or raki is polite and expected.
Religious sites. Dress modestly (covered shoulders/knees) when visiting mosques or churches.
Albania is generally safe with low rates of violent crime against tourists.
Taxi overcharging. Agree on a fare beforehand or use a ride-hailing app rather than hailing unmarked taxis.
Fake police / on-the-spot fines. Ask for identification and insist on going to a police station for any real fine; genuine officers do not demand cash on the street.
Women travelers. Generally safe, including solo; occasional catcalling in cities, more conservative attitudes in rural areas.
Legal · Mostly Safe
Legal since 1995 with some anti-discrimination protections since 2010, but social attitudes remain conservative outside Tirana; public displays of affection between same-sex couples are best avoided.

Late spring (May-June) and September are ideal: warm, sunny and less crowded than peak summer. July-August is hot and busy on the coast; winter is cold and wet with the coast largely shut down.
