Greetings. Men shake hands, often warmly; with women, a nod or a light handshake offered by her is usual. Relatives and close friends kiss on the cheek. Greet elders first and use polite forms of address until invited to use first names.
Hospitality and toasts. Guests are treated as an honor; meals often involve many toasts — it's polite to participate rather than refuse.
Homes and churches. Remove shoes when entering someone's home, and dress modestly when visiting monasteries and churches.
Sensitive topics. Be thoughtful discussing the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey.
Armenia is generally safe with low crime, though border areas near Azerbaijan should be avoided due to ongoing conflict-related risk.
Taxi overcharging. Use ride-hailing apps like Yandex or GG rather than negotiating with unmarked taxis.
Unofficial currency exchange. Exchange money at banks or licensed exchange points, not informal street vendors.
Women travelers. Generally safe, including solo travel, though rural areas can be more conservative.
Legal · Use Caution
Same-sex relations have been legal since 2003, but there are no anti-discrimination protections and social stigma remains strong; public displays of affection between same-sex couples can draw hostility, especially outside Yerevan.
