Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. A firm handshake with direct eye contact is standard and fairly formal, especially with older people and officials.

Registration rules. Foreign visitors staying beyond a short period may need to register their stay; check current requirements before arrival.

Political topics. Avoid photographing government or military buildings, and be cautious discussing politics in public.

Safety And Scams

Street crime is low, but the political environment is repressive and unpredictable: several governments currently advise against travel to Belarus due to the risk of arbitrary detention, tightened border/exit controls, and the country's role in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Bureaucratic and documentation issues. Rather than street scams, the bigger risk is paperwork problems (registration, currency declarations); keep all official receipts and documents.

Taxi overcharging at stations/airports. Agree fares in advance or use official taxi ranks.

Women travelers. Street harassment is uncommon, but the same political-risk caveats above apply regardless of gender.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Partly legal · Use Caution

Same-sex relations have been legal since 1994, but Belarus provides no anti-discrimination protections, and a sweeping new law passed in April 2026 criminalizes 'propaganda' of homosexuality and gender transition (fines, and detention up to 15 days in cases involving minors); the climate for LGBTQ+ people has become notably more repressive.

Best Time To Visit

May to September is warm with the longest days; note that many governments currently advise against travel to Belarus for political reasons, not weather.
