Greetings. Greetings are important and can be lengthy. Shake hands, often with the left hand touching the right forearm as a sign of respect, and ask about health and family before other conversation.
Giving and receiving. Use the right hand or both hands when giving or receiving items.
Photography. Ask permission before photographing people, and avoid photographing government or military sites.
Burundi has seen safety improvements since 2020 and Bujumbura, Gitega and the Lake Tanganyika beaches are generally manageable for tourists taking common precautions, but fuel shortages, currency instability and periodic political tension affect daily life and travel logistics; petty crime exists in Bujumbura, and the border areas with DR Congo (Cibitoke and Bubanza provinces) should be avoided due to armed-group activity, so check current advisories before travel.
Black-market currency exchange. Use official banks or licensed exchange points; informal exchanges can shortchange travelers.
Overcharging foreigners. Agree prices with market vendors and drivers before purchasing or riding.
Women travelers. Added caution is advised, particularly regarding travel after dark and outside Bujumbura.
Criminalized
Criminalized since the 2009 penal code (three months to two years' imprisonment plus a fine); arbitrary arrests of LGBTQ+ people have occurred and the constitution bans same-sex marriage — real legal and social risk, extreme discretion needed.

2026-09
June-August (dry season) is most comfortable for travel, with a shorter dry spell in December-January. The long and short rainy seasons make unpaved roads harder to travel the rest of the year.
