Greetings. Greet with a handshake and always use titles or elder respect; take time for small talk before business, as rushing greetings is considered rude.
Right hand use. Use the right hand (or both hands) for giving and receiving items, eating, and handshakes; the left hand is considered unclean for these purposes.
Photography. Ask permission before photographing people, government buildings, or military sites; officials may demand a 'permit fee' even when none is legally required.
Petty crime is common in cities, and armed roadblocks or hold-ups on intercity roads have been reported; the Far North, North-West and South-West regions have active conflict and should generally be avoided.
Romance/online scams. Scammers use dating sites to build relationships before asking for money; be very cautious about meeting online acquaintances in person.
Fake permit fees. Locals or officials may ask for payment to photograph sites; confirm any official fee before paying and avoid photographing sensitive buildings.
Roadblock hold-ups. Criminals sometimes stop vehicles at gunpoint on rural roads; travel with a reputable driver or tour operator and avoid night travel between cities.
Women travelers. Women travelers should dress modestly, avoid walking alone at night, and be prepared for persistent street attention in cities.
Criminalized
Same-sex relationships are illegal in Cameroon and punishable by up to 5 years in prison; LGBTQ+ people and travelers face real risk of arrest, harassment, and violence, so discretion is essential.
