Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. A firm handshake with eye contact is standard; close friends may greet with a cheek kiss on each side.

Coffee culture. Coffee is a slow social ritual; lingering over a single coffee for an hour is completely normal and expected.

Beach etiquette. Many beaches are pebble, not sand, and nude/topless bathing is common on designated beaches — check local norms before undressing fully.

Safety And Scams

Croatia is very safe for tourists; violent crime is rare, and the main risks are petty theft in crowded tourist areas and overpriced services on the coast in peak season.

Taxi overcharging. Unmetered taxis, especially around Dubrovnik's Old Town and ferry ports, may overcharge; use metered cabs or ride-hailing apps.

Restaurant menu tricks. Some tourist-area restaurants add unlisted charges (bread, service) or use a differently priced menu for tourists; check the bill carefully.

Women travelers. Generally very safe; standard precautions apply in nightlife areas, but harassment is uncommon compared to many destinations.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Mostly Safe

Same-sex activity has been legal since 1977, and same-sex couples can register a 'life partnership' with nearly all marriage rights (though not marriage itself) and can now jointly adopt; Zagreb and Split have LGBTQ+ scenes, though rural areas are more conservative.
