Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. A handshake is standard; among friends, a light cheek kiss (once or twice) is common. Hospitality is valued — accepting offered coffee or food is polite.

Religious sites. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) when visiting Orthodox churches or monasteries.

Political sensitivity. The island's division (Republic of Cyprus / Northern Cyprus) is a sensitive topic; avoid casual political commentary, especially when crossing the Green Line.

Safety And Scams

Cyprus is a low-crime destination overall, though petty scams and overcharging occur in nightlife areas like Ayia Napa and Limassol.

Nightclub bill inflation. Some clubs in Ayia Napa and Limassol charge highly inflated bills or add unlisted fees; check menus for prices and avoid venues without visible pricing.

Overpriced souvenirs/taxis. Tourist zones sometimes overcharge for goods and unmetered taxi rides; agree on taxi fares beforehand or use metered/rideshare options.

Timeshare touts. Aggressive timeshare or excursion sales pitches occur in resort areas; politely decline and walk away from high-pressure offers.

Women travelers. Generally safe for women, though some street harassment has been reported at night around Nicosia's Ledra Street; stick to well-lit tourist areas after dark.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Mostly Safe

In the Republic of Cyprus, same-sex activity has been legal since 1998 with civil partnerships since 2015 (marriage not yet recognized); in Northern Cyprus, homosexuality was decriminalized in 2014. Both sides remain socially conservative compared to Western Europe.
