Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. A handshake is standard on meeting; among friends, a light cheek kiss is common between women and between men and women.

Punctuality is relaxed. Social plans often start later than stated; business meetings expect more punctuality than casual gatherings.

Volcano and nature etiquette. Hire a local guide for volcano hikes; trails can be unmarked and conditions change quickly.

Safety And Scams

Security has improved dramatically since 2019, and as of September 2026 the country carries a Level 1 'Exercise Normal Precautions' advisory from the US, though visitors should still avoid walking alone at night in certain San Salvador neighborhoods and watch belongings in crowded markets.

Dating app scams. Scammers target foreign visitors through dating apps, sometimes leading to robbery or blackmail; meet new contacts in public places only.

Credit card fraud. Card skimming and fraud occur; use cash where possible and monitor statements for unauthorized charges.

Pickpocketing in markets. Busy markets and bus terminals see occasional pickpocketing; keep valuables secure and out of sight.

Women travelers. Women travelers generally report feeling safe with normal precautions; harassment can occur but is not a major widespread issue in tourist areas.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Use Caution

Same-sex relationships are legal, but marriage, civil unions, and adoption are not recognized, and there are no explicit anti-discrimination protections; public displays of affection outside San Salvador can draw harassment or worse, so caution is advised.
