Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. A brief, firm handshake with eye contact is standard; Estonians are generally reserved and value personal space over small talk with strangers.

Shoes indoors. It's customary to remove shoes when entering someone's home; guests are often provided with slippers.

Directness. Estonians tend to communicate concisely and value silence in conversation, which is not considered awkward as it might be elsewhere.

Safety And Scams

Estonia is one of the safer countries in Europe with low crime; petty theft and nightlife-related scams are the main concerns, mostly in Tallinn's Old Town.

Bar/club overcharging. Friendly strangers, sometimes young women, invite tourists to a specific bar where drink prices turn out to be massively inflated; be wary of unsolicited invitations to unfamiliar venues.

Pickpocketing in Old Town. Crowded medieval streets and nightlife areas see occasional pickpocketing; keep valuables secure and zipped.

Taxi overcharging. Unlicensed or unmetered taxis may overcharge; use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps like Bolt.

Women travelers. Women travel very safely with rare harassment; normal caution around bars and nightlife late at night is still advisable.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Mostly Safe

Estonia legalized same-sex marriage in 2024, making it one of the most progressive countries in the Baltic region; Tallinn is generally welcoming, though public displays of affection may draw more attention in smaller towns.
