About 10% in restaurants, often added to the bill; small tips for guides and porters are expected.
Greetings. A handshake is standard; women friends may greet with a single cheek kiss. Take time for small talk before discussing business.
Bargaining. Light haggling is acceptable at markets but not at fixed-price shops or restaurants.
Caution with photography. Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing police, military, or security installations.
Honduras has a reputation for high crime, but the main tourist circuit (Copán, Roatán/Bay Islands) is genuinely manageable with basic precautions; avoid Comayagüela (Tegucigalpa) after dark and be cautious in San Pedro Sula.
Taxi overcharging. Always agree a fare before riding, or use a ride-hailing app like InDriver, especially at airports and bus terminals.
Unofficial 'guide' scam at ruins. Unofficial guides approach visitors at Copán's entrance; hire only guides with an official badge from the ticket office.
ATM skimming. Use ATMs inside banks or hotels rather than standalone street machines.
Women travelers. Catcalling and unwanted attention are reported; never leave drinks unattended, and avoid walking home alone late at night.
Legal · Use Caution
Same-sex sexual activity is legal, but same-sex marriage is constitutionally banned and there's no partnership recognition or strong anti-discrimination law; social conservatism means discretion is advised outside Roatán and Tegucigalpa's small scene.

The dry season (November-April) is the best time to visit most of the country, including Copán and the Bay Islands; hurricane season (roughly June-November) brings a higher risk of storms, especially on the Caribbean coast.
