Greetings and pace. Greetings are warm and unhurried; a friendly "Wha gwaan" or handshake goes a long way, and rushing transactions can come across as rude.
Modest dress off the beach. Swimwear is for the beach or pool only; cover up in towns, markets and when visiting churches or government offices.
Marijuana laws. Cannabis is decriminalized only in small amounts and legal use is restricted to licensed contexts (e.g., some Rastafari religious use, medical dispensaries); casual purchase/use as a tourist can still lead to legal trouble.
Jamaica is generally safe in tourist areas and resorts, but has higher rates of violent crime in some urban areas (notably parts of Kingston and Montego Bay) that travelers should avoid, especially after dark.
Lottery/prize scams. Calls or messages claiming you've won a prize and must pay a fee are common; never send money for an unsolicited "winning."
Unlicensed taxis and touts. Agree on a fare before riding and prefer licensed (red license plate) taxis or hotel-arranged transport; unsolicited "guides" at attractions may pressure for tips or push add-on purchases.
Drug offers. Street sellers offering drugs to tourists can lead to robbery or police extortion attempts; decline and walk away.
Women travelers. Sexual harassment and persistent unwanted advances toward women travelers are fairly common; sticking to well-trafficked areas, dressing modestly outside resorts and being firm about declining attention are recommended.
Criminalized
Same-sex sexual activity between men is illegal (though rarely prosecuted) and Jamaica remains socially conservative and at times openly hostile toward LGBTQ+ people; public affection outside a small number of resorts can risk harassment or worse.

2026-09
Mid-December to April is the dry season with the most reliable sunny weather and the highest prices; hurricane season runs June-November (peak August-October), though Jamaica is hit less often than more northerly Caribbean islands.
