Greetings. Basotho greetings are unhurried and polite; always greet before starting a conversation, with a handshake and "Dumela" (hello), adding "Ntate" to men and "Mme" to women as a polite title.
Warm clothing. The highlands are cold year-round; a Basotho blanket is both a practical and culturally significant garment worn by locals of all ages.
Photographing people. Ask permission before photographing people or homes, particularly in rural villages.
Lesotho is generally safe for tourists who take standard precautions; petty crime and occasional scams occur in Maseru and around tourist sites, while rural areas are calmer.
Fake roadside fines. People posing as officers invent speeding fines and demand cash on the spot; real fines are paid at court or the post office, never roadside.
Inflated taxi fares. Drivers may ask absurd amounts for short rides, especially from tourists; agree the fare before getting in.
ATM card-swap. A 'helpful' bystander watches your PIN and swaps your card while you're distracted; shield your PIN and count on your card after each withdrawal.
Unofficial child guides. Kids at waterfalls like Maletsunyane tag along as guides then demand inflated fees; agree a price upfront or decline politely.
Women travelers. Basotho society is conservative but generally polite; women travel solo without much trouble, though harassment can occur in bars or nightclubs and walking alone at night is not advised.
Legal · Use Caution
Male and female same-sex activity has been legal since 2012, and a 2024 labor law bans discrimination based on sexual orientation, but same-sex marriage isn't recognized and social stigma and discrimination persist.

April-May and September-October are the sweet spot: dry, mild, and great for hiking; December-February is warm and green but rainier, while June-August is cold and dry, good for the ski season at Afriski.
