Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. Greetings are warm and unhurried; a handshake and asking about someone's family before business is expected and appreciated.

Modest dress. Casual but modest dress is respected, especially outside Monrovia; swimwear should stay at the beach or pool.

Photographing people. Always ask permission before photographing people, government buildings, or security personnel; some may request payment.

Safety And Scams

Liberia is largely peaceful since the end of its civil wars, but petty crime, occasional muggings after dark, and weak infrastructure mean travelers should stay alert, especially in Monrovia at night.

Fake tour guides and deals. Unofficial guides offer discounted tours that turn out fraudulent or overpriced; book through a known operator or hotel.

Bribe requests / fake fines. Some officials at checkpoints or the airport may ask for unofficial "fees"; stay calm, ask for a receipt, and avoid handing over documents unnecessarily.

Online romance/dating scams. Scammers target foreigners on dating apps and social media claiming to be in Liberia; never send money to someone you haven't met in person.

Women travelers. Women traveling alone may face harassment and unwanted attention; risk is elevated at night, so arrange transport in advance and avoid isolated areas after dark.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Criminalized

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal (up to one year in prison), and a harsher anti-homosexuality bill has been proposed in parliament; LGBTQ+ travelers should be very discreet.

Best Time To Visit

The dry season from November to April is best, with December-February the sunniest; avoid the May-October rainy season when dirt roads and even parts of Monrovia can flood.
