Greetings. A firm handshake with eye contact is standard; Lithuanians are generally reserved with strangers but warm once acquainted.
Shoes indoors. It's customary to remove shoes when entering someone's home.
Toasting. Maintain eye contact when clinking glasses for a toast; it's considered good manners.
Lithuania is one of the safer countries in Europe, with low violent crime; petty theft and nightlife scams around Vilnius Old Town are the main risks.
Taxi overcharging. Unlicensed taxis or drivers without a working meter may overcharge tourists; use a licensed taxi or an app like Bolt/Uber.
Bar/club overcharging. Some nightlife venues in tourist zones inflate bills or add unlisted charges; check the menu and bill carefully.
Pickpocketing. Most reports come from Vilnius Old Town and transport hubs; keep bags zipped and valuables out of back pockets.
Women travelers. Solo female travelers generally feel safe, including at night in central Vilnius, though standard nightlife precautions (watching drinks, avoiding walking alone very late) still apply.
Legal · Mostly Safe
Same-sex relations are legal, and since April 2025 a Constitutional Court ruling requires legal recognition of same-sex partnerships (registrable via courts, with legislation pending); same-sex marriage remains constitutionally banned and social attitudes are more conservative than Western Europe.
