Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. A handshake is standard on meeting; among friends, cheek kisses (usually three) are common.

Punctuality. Luxembourgers value punctuality for appointments and social occasions; arriving late is considered impolite.

Languages. Luxembourgish, French, and German are all official; locals appreciate an attempt at any of the three, though English is widely understood in the capital.

Safety And Scams

Luxembourg is one of the safest countries in the world, with very low crime; petty theft near the train station and tourist hubs is the main concern.

Fake petition distraction. Someone asks you to sign a clipboard petition while an accomplice picks your pocket; politely decline and keep bags close.

Unmetered taxi overcharging. Occasional overcharging on informal or unmetered taxi rides; use licensed taxis or ride apps and confirm the fare.

Overly friendly 'guides'. Unsolicited offers of help or tours near major sights sometimes lead to pressure for a tip or fee; feel free to decline.

Women travelers. Very safe for women; harassment is rare, and well-lit streets and good transport make nighttime travel comfortable, though normal urban caution (e.g., around the Gare/train station area) is still wise.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Safe

Same-sex marriage and adoption have been legal since 2015, and strong anti-discrimination protections exist; Luxembourg is one of Europe's most LGBTQ+-friendly countries.
