Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. Greetings are warm and important; take time to ask about family and wellbeing before discussing business, and use the right hand for handshakes.

Dress modestly. Modest dress is expected, especially away from lakeside resort areas; swimwear should be limited to pools and designated beach areas.

Respect for elders. Age and authority are respected; greet older people first and avoid public confrontation or raised voices.

Safety And Scams

Malawi is considered one of the safer countries in Africa to visit, with low rates of violent crime against tourists, though petty theft and scams occur in cities and tourist hubs.

Overpriced taxis. Taxis rarely use meters; agree on a fare before the ride, especially at airports and bus stations.

Fake or unlicensed guides. Self-styled guides may approach tourists at Lake Malawi and national parks; book guides through your lodge or a registered operator.

Currency/change scams. Some vendors shortchange tourists or refuse to break large notes; carry small denominations and count change carefully.

Women travelers. Solo women travelers generally report feeling safe and find locals respectful, though verbal harassment and unwanted attention can occur; dressing modestly and avoiding solo night walks is recommended.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Criminalized

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Malawi under colonial-era penal code provisions, with penalties of up to 14 years' imprisonment; a moratorium on prosecutions has held since 2014, but discrimination and social stigma are common and public displays of same-sex affection carry real risk.

Best Time To Visit

May to October (dry season) is best, with June-October ideal for wildlife viewing along Lake Malawi and in the parks; the rainy season (November-April) can make secondary roads impassable.
