Greetings. Greetings are elaborate and important, often with several exchanges about family and health before business; rushing is rude. Shake hands, often for a long time, and some people touch the chest afterward. Wait for women to offer a hand.
Modest dress. Modest dress is expected, especially for women; conservative clothing is respectful given Mali's predominantly Muslim population.
Right hand. Use the right hand for eating and giving/receiving objects.
Mali is under a Do Not Travel advisory from the US, Canada, and other governments due to terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, and violent crime, including attacks near Bamako itself; there is currently no viable tourism outside essential travel.
Overcharging foreigners. Prices for goods, taxis, and services are often quoted higher for foreigners; agree fares and prices in advance.
Fake fixers/guides. Unofficial guides may promise access or safety assurances they can't deliver; any travel should go through a vetted security-aware operator, not informal contacts.
Women travelers. Given the overall security situation, risk to women travelers is dominated by the general threat of kidnapping and armed violence rather than routine harassment; travel is not advisable.
Criminalized
Same-sex sexual activity was criminalized under a new penal code in December 2024 (2-7 years in prison and a fine), and even 'promoting' homosexuality is prohibited; LGBTQ+ travelers face serious legal risk and should not travel or disclose orientation.
