Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. A handshake is standard; among friends, cheek kisses are common. Hospitality is highly valued, and being offered wine or food should generally be accepted graciously.

Toasting etiquette. Given Moldova's wine culture, toasts are common at meals; it's polite to take at least a sip when toasted.

Shoes indoors. It's customary to remove shoes when entering someone's home.

Safety And Scams

Moldova is generally safe for tourists, with low levels of violent crime; petty theft, taxi overcharging, and dating-app scams are the more common concerns, and the breakaway region of Transnistria warrants extra caution.

Dating-app extortion. Scammers match with travelers on apps, lure them to a specific bar, and present a massively inflated bill enforced by intimidating staff; avoid bars suggested by an online match you haven't vetted.

Unlicensed taxi overcharging. Drivers without meters may inflate fares, especially from the airport; use a licensed taxi app or agree the fare beforehand.

Fake 'friendship bracelet'. Someone ties a string bracelet on you in a public park (e.g., Stefan cel Mare Park) then demands payment; decline firmly and walk away.

Women travelers. Moldova is relatively safe for solo women; catcalling is more common than physical harassment, but walking alone late at night is best avoided.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Use Caution

Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1995 and workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation is banned, but same-sex marriage is constitutionally banned and unions aren't recognized; EU accession progress has coincided with gradual improvements, though social attitudes remain conservative.

Best Time To Visit

May, September, and October offer the best combination of mild weather and manageable crowds, especially good for wine country visits; June-August is warm and busy, while December-February is cold and the least appealing.
