Greetings. A firm handshake with eye contact is standard; among friends and family, cheek kisses are common.
Coffee culture. Coffee is a social ritual, often lingering for an hour or more; don't rush a shared coffee with locals.
Church etiquette. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) when visiting Orthodox monasteries and churches like those in Kotor Bay.
Montenegro is a safe destination with low violent crime; pickpocketing and taxi overcharging around tourist hotspots and airports are the main issues.
Unlicensed airport taxis. Men approaching arriving travelers in the airport hall are often unlicensed drivers with inflated prices; walk to the official taxi rank outside instead.
Taxi/tour overcharging. Some taxis and tour operators quote exorbitant rates to tourists; agree the price beforehand or use a metered/app-based taxi.
Fake apartment listings. Summer rental scams involve nonexistent or misrepresented apartments; book through reputable platforms and verify reviews.
Women travelers. Montenegro ranks among the safer countries for solo women; harassment in daylight is rare, though nightlife in Budva can bring overly forward behavior from some men.
Legal · Mostly Safe
Same-sex sexual activity is legal, and since 2021 same-sex couples can register a Life Partnership with most spousal rights (excluding adoption); anti-discrimination protections exist, though full legal alignment and public acceptance still lag.

June and September are the sweet spot, with reliable sunshine, warm sea, and thinner crowds; July-August is hottest, busiest, and priciest, while winter is cold and wet, especially in the mountains.
