Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. Shake hands with everyone, firmly, and say your name. Friends and relatives greet with three kisses on the cheek, alternating sides; men greeting men usually shake hands. Greet each person in a small group individually.

Directness. The Dutch are known for blunt, direct communication; this is not considered rude and is generally appreciated in business and daily life.

Cycling etiquette. Bikes have priority on many streets; never walk in bike lanes, and look both ways before crossing them.

Splitting the bill. Splitting restaurant bills evenly ('going Dutch') is common and not considered impolite.

Safety And Scams

The Netherlands is one of the safest countries in Europe; standard urban precautions around pickpocketing and bike theft are the main concerns for tourists.

Pickpocketing on trams and at stations. Crowded trams and areas around Amsterdam Centraal Station attract pickpockets; keep bags zipped and in front of you.

Bicycle theft. Rental bike theft is common; always use both the frame lock and a supplementary chain lock provided by the rental company.

Red Light District hustlers. Late-night crowds there include petty thieves and occasional scams; stay alert and avoid unsolicited offers.

Women travelers. Solo women travelers generally feel very safe throughout the country, including at night in most areas.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Safe

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage (2001) and has strong anti-discrimination protections; it is one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly destinations globally, especially Amsterdam.

Best Time To Visit

Late May to early October is the ideal window for warm days, long daylight and festival season, with September offering the best balance of good weather, thinner crowds and lower prices; peak summer (June-August) is busiest, and winter (November-February) is cold, dark and rainy.
