Greetings. In Noumea, "bonjour" with a handshake, or a kiss on the cheek between friends (la bise), is usual. In Kanak communities, shake hands gently, greet elders and the chief first, and avoid hugging or kissing until invited.
Coutume (custom gift). When visiting Kanak tribal land or villages, a small traditional gift (coutume) of fabric, tobacco or food is customary before entering.
Ask before photographing. Always ask permission before photographing people or sacred sites in Kanak villages.
Modest dress in villages. Dress modestly when visiting indigenous villages, even though beachwear is fine at resorts.
New Caledonia is generally safe for tourists, especially in Noumea and resort areas; the main hazards are natural (strong currents, reef passes) rather than crime, though political tensions have periodically flared and are worth checking before travel.
Overpriced tours in high season. Some informal tour operators overcharge in peak months; book through licensed operators or your hotel.
Car rental damage disputes. As elsewhere, photograph the rental car before and after use to avoid disputed damage charges.
Women travelers. Solo women travelers generally report feeling safe; standard precautions apply, and swimming/snorkeling should always be done with a buddy due to currents.
Legal · Mostly Safe
Same-sex activity has always been legal and same-sex marriage has been recognized under French law since 2013, with strong anti-discrimination protections; New Caledonia is broadly LGBTQ+-friendly, especially in Noumea.

May to October (dry season) is best, with September to November offering the most reliable sunny, low-humidity weather for swimming; the wet season (November-April) is hotter and coincides with cyclone risk.
