Not expected or customary; a thank you is enough.
Greetings and manners. Smile, greet people with 'fakaalofa atu' and give a gentle handshake. Cover up in villages. Take your shoes off before entering a home and ask before taking photos of people.
Sunday rest. Sunday is for church and family. Most things are closed, and swimming or loud activity in villages can offend, so check what is acceptable locally.
Reef and sea track safety. Many chasms and sea tracks are on land owned by families and the tide can be dangerous. Follow signs and local advice, especially in the swell, and do not swim alone.
Niue is very safe for visitors, with almost no crime. The real risks are the sea, cliffs and sea snakes, and medical care is limited.
Unsecured rental cars. Take photos of a rental before driving and check what damage is covered, since there are few places to compare.
Booking confusion. Small guesthouses may not always be reachable online; confirm your booking by email before you fly.
Women travelers. Generally very safe for women, including at night. Dress modestly in villages.
Legal · Use Caution
Sex between men was decriminalized in 2024. Niue is small, church-going and conservative, and there is no same-sex marriage, so public affection is best kept low-key.
