Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. A firm handshake with eye contact is standard; close friends may exchange cheek kisses. Use surnames and titles until invited to switch to first names.

Flowers and gifts. If invited to someone's home, bring an odd number of flowers (even numbers are for funerals) and remove your shoes at the door.

Toasts and hospitality. If offered vodka, a toast usually precedes drinking; it's polite to at least sip, but you can decline alcohol gracefully by explaining why.

Safety And Scams

Poland is one of the safer countries in Europe for tourists, with low rates of violent crime; petty theft and nightlife-related scams in tourist zones are the main things to watch for.

Nightclub/bar overcharging. Street promoters lure visitors into bars in the Old Town with hidden pricing or inflated tabs; research venues in advance and be wary of unsolicited invitations.

Taxi overcharging. Unmetered or unofficial taxis, especially at airports and stations, may overcharge; use Uber, Bolt, or a licensed taxi company instead.

Fake police / document scams. Rare but reported: people posing as plainclothes officers ask to see documents or money; ask for identification and, if unsure, insist on going to a police station.

Women travelers. Poland is considered one of the safer European countries for solo women travelers; avoid poorly lit areas like South Praga in Warsaw late at night, and use normal caution around nightlife districts.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Mostly Safe

Same-sex sexual activity is legal, but Poland has no civil partnerships or marriage for same-sex couples; a 2026 bill to create a "Closest Person Status" partnership was vetoed by the president, and a court ruling recognizing foreign same-sex marriages was later struck down by the Constitutional Tribunal, so LGBTQ+ travelers may encounter a more conservative social climate outside major cities.
