Customs And Etiquette

Greetings and respect. A handshake, sometimes with the left hand supporting the right forearm as a sign of respect, is standard; addressing elders and officials politely is important.

Genocide memory. The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi is a deeply sensitive and present topic; visit memorials respectfully and let locals decide how much they wish to discuss it.

Cleanliness and plastic bags. Rwanda banned single-use plastic bags; they will be confiscated at the airport. Rwanda is famously clean, partly due to monthly community clean-up days (Umuganda).

Safety And Scams

Rwanda is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in Africa for tourists, including solo travelers, with Kigali frequently cited as one of the continent's cleanest and safest capitals; opportunistic petty theft and transport overcharging are the main practical concerns rather than violent crime.

Fake gorilla trekking permits. Scammers sell discounted permits online or in Kigali that turn out to be invalid; book only through the Rwanda Development Board or well-established, verifiable tour operators.

Moto-taxi overcharging. Motorcycle taxi drivers may quote inflated fares to tourists; agree on a price before the ride or use a ride-hailing app where available.

Unsolicited "helpful" strangers. Someone offers unsolicited help (with luggage, directions, etc.) and then demands an exorbitant fee; politely decline unsolicited assistance.

Women travelers. Solo women travelers consistently report feeling safe and respected in Rwanda; standard precautions around transport and belongings in crowded markets or bus stations are sufficient.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Use Caution

Same-sex sexual activity is legal in Rwanda, but there is no recognition of same-sex marriage or partnerships, and homosexuality remains a strong social taboo; transgender individuals in particular have faced arbitrary arrests during identity checks, so LGBTQ+ travelers should keep a low public profile.

Best Time To Visit

June-September (long dry season) and December-February (short dry season) offer the best hiking conditions for gorilla trekking, with clearer trails and more active gorillas; March-May is the rainy season and best avoided for trekking.
