Greetings. As in Italy, shake hands when meeting. Friends and family greet with kisses on the cheek, usually two; say "Buongiorno" or "Buonasera".
Crossing the border. There is no border post with Italy. You can ask the tourist office in the old town for a stamp for your passport, for a small fee.
Ceremonial changes. The Captains Regent step into office every April and October. Streets near Palazzo Pubblico may be closed that day.
Dress for church and old town. Cover shoulders and knees when entering churches such as the Basilica di San Marino.
San Marino is among the safest places in Europe, with very low crime. Steep, uneven streets are the main hazard.
Overpriced souvenir shops. Check prices before buying 'duty-free' goods, which may not be cheaper than in Italy.
Parking confusion. Use official car parks. Rimini day-trip buses are safer than looking for free parking.
Women travelers. Very safe day and night.
Legal · Mostly Safe
Same-sex relations are legal, and San Marino has recognized same-sex civil unions since 2018. Local attitudes are generally tolerant, though it is a small, traditional, Catholic country.
