Greetings. A firm handshake with eye contact is standard; Slovenians are generally reserved with strangers but warm once acquainted.
Hiking etiquette. Stick to marked trails in the mountains and greet fellow hikers; nature and outdoor life are central to local culture.
Recycling. Slovenes take recycling and cleanliness seriously; sort waste properly, especially in rentals and campsites.
Slovenia is one of the safest countries in Europe, with very low violent crime and a well-developed tourism infrastructure.
Overpriced tourist-area restaurants. Menus without prices in very touristy spots (Bled, Ljubljana Old Town) can lead to inflated bills; check prices before ordering.
Parking and toll confusion. Slovenia's highways require a prepaid vignette sticker; renting a car without one leads to fines - buy at a border station or gas station.
Women travelers. Slovenia is very safe for women travelers; harassment is uncommon and solo women frequently hike and travel around the country without issue.
Legal · Mostly Safe
Same-sex sexual activity is legal and same-sex marriage and adoption became fully legal in 2023 after a landmark court ruling; Slovenia is broadly progressive, though attitudes can be more conservative outside Ljubljana.
