Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. Handshakes are common between men; wait for a woman to extend her hand first. A hand over the heart with a slight bow is a respectful alternative.

Hospitality. Tajiks are famously hospitable; accepting tea and food when offered, especially in homestays, is expected and refusing can seem rude.

Dress and photos. Dress modestly, especially outside Dushanbe; ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing military or government buildings/checkpoints.

Safety And Scams

Tajikistan is generally safe for travelers, with low rates of violent crime against tourists, though some border areas (Afghanistan border, Gorno-Badakhshan) see periodic unrest and require permits.

Fake 'ruby' gem sellers. In the Pamirs, sellers may offer 'rubies' that are actually cheaper spinel; buy gems only from reputable dealers with certification.

Overcharging foreigners. Taxi drivers and market vendors sometimes quote inflated prices to visitors; agree on fares beforehand and check typical prices with your guesthouse.

Women travelers. Solo women may draw more attention or unwanted approaches than in Western countries; avoiding walking alone at night and dressing modestly reduces hassle.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Legal · Use Caution

Same-sex relationships are legal, but social attitudes are conservative and police have carried out raids and harassment (including forced HIV testing) targeting LGBTQ+ people in past years, so discretion is strongly advised.

Best Time To Visit

Late June to early September is best overall, when the Pamir Highway's high passes are open and weather is stable; outside that window the high mountains are snowbound.
