Not expected; a gift or a heartfelt thank you is the Tongan way, and tips are not part of the culture.
Greetings. Say "Malo e lelei" with a smile and a gentle handshake. Men and women typically shake hands.
Sunday is sacred. Almost everything is closed on Sundays, and work, sport and swimming in public places are not done. Dress modestly and go to a church service if invited; the choirs are wonderful.
Dress modestly. Both women and men should cover their shoulders and knees in towns and villages. Many Tongans wear a ta'ovala (woven mat) around the waist for formal occasions.
Respect for rank and royalty. Tongan society values rank and respect. Be polite to elders, avoid touching people's heads, and do not stand taller than someone of high rank at a formal event.
Tonga is generally safe and friendly. Petty theft and some drunken disturbances at night in Nuku'alofa occur, and ocean conditions and cyclones are the larger risks.
Unpriced taxi rides. Taxis are not metered, so agree the fare before you start; airport transfers are expensive.
Last-minute whale tour deals. Book whale swims with licensed operators; unlicensed boats can be unsafe and break whale-protection rules.
Women travelers. Generally safe for women who dress modestly; dress codes are conservative, and unwanted attention at night, especially around bars, can happen.
Criminalized
Sex between men is a crime in Tonga with a maximum of ten years in prison, but there is no evidence it is enforced. Tonga has the fakaleiti, men who live as women, but society is conservative and public affection should be avoided.
