Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. Men shake hands, often hold on for a while, and put the hand to the heart; close friends embrace or kiss on the cheek. Wait for a woman to offer her hand. "As-salamu alaykum" is the standard greeting.

Not currently a tourist destination. Yemen is in active civil war and virtually all foreign governments advise against all travel; this entry is for reference only, not trip planning.

Conservative Islamic norms. Where any travel occurs (small escorted tours to Hadhramaut), modest dress covering arms and legs is expected, and alcohol, pork and pornography are illegal to import or possess.

Chewing qat. Chewing qat leaves is a widespread daily social custom among Yemeni men in the afternoon; it is not illegal in Yemen itself but is a controlled substance in many other countries, so don't carry it across borders.

Safety And Scams

Yemen is in active civil war with frontlines, airstrikes, drone strikes, landmines and a high risk of arbitrary detention of foreigners; every major government maintains a Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisory, and kidnapping is a serious risk.

n/a. Ordinary tourist scams are not the relevant risk here; the danger is armed conflict, kidnapping and detention, not petty crime.

Women travelers. Women should not travel to Yemen under current conditions; beyond the general war risk, conservative dress (covering hair, arms and legs) would be expected in any accessible area.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Death penalty

Consensual same-sex relations are criminalized; the penal code prescribes the death penalty by stoning for men and imprisonment for women, and Houthi-run courts have sentenced people to death, flogging or imprisonment for homosexuality in recent years. This is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for LGBTQ+ people.

Best Time To Visit

If travel were feasible, October to April would be best, avoiding summer heat that can exceed 50°C on the coast; but active civil war makes the entire question moot for now.
