-(으)ㄹ 수 있다 (-(eu)l su itda) means "to can" in Korean. Simplest present: (subject often dropped; pronoun + 는/은 or 이/가 when stated) 갈 수 있어요 (gal su isseoyo). Below: all 3 tenses we teach, with examples.
Drop -다 from the dictionary form and add -아요/어요. 가다's stem 가- ends in the bright vowel ㅏ, so it takes -아요, contracting 가+아요 to 가요.
| (subject often dropped; pronoun + 는/은 or 이/가 when stated) | 갈 수 있어요 (gal su isseoyo) |
Insert -았/었- before the polite ending: 가- + -았- + -어요 becomes 갔어요.
| (subject often dropped; pronoun + 는/은 or 이/가 when stated) | 갈 수 있었어요 (gal su isseosseoyo) |
Add -(으)ㄹ 거예요 ("going to / will") to the stem: 가- + -ㄹ 거예요 becomes 갈 거예요.
| (subject often dropped; pronoun + 는/은 or 이/가 when stated) | 갈 수 있을 거예요 (gal su isseul geoyeyo) |
| 저는 내일 갈 수 있어요. Jeoneun naeil gal su isseoyo. | I can go tomorrow. |
| 한국어를 조금 할 수 있어요. Hangugeoreul jogeum hal su isseoyo. | I can speak a little Korean. |
