Customs And Etiquette

Greetings. A handshake is standard between men; men should wait for a woman to extend her hand first, as physical contact between genders in public is limited.

Dress and modesty. Modest dress is expected for both men and women, especially outside coastal cities; women should consider covering arms, legs, and sometimes hair.

Ramadan and prayer times. During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours; many businesses adjust hours around prayer times.

Safety And Scams

Algeria is generally safe for tourists in main cities and coastal areas, though some border and southern desert regions carry higher security risk and require official guides or permits.

Fake tour guides. Unlicensed individuals, especially around the Kasbah of Algiers, offer guiding services and may overcharge or mislead; book tours through your hotel or a licensed operator.

Currency exchange scams. Informal money changers may shortchange tourists; use official banks or exchange offices.

Overcharging tourists. Unofficial taxis or vendors in tourist areas may inflate prices; agree on costs beforehand.

Women travelers. Women travelers should dress conservatively and avoid physical contact with men in public; solo female travel is less common and may draw more attention, so joining a guided tour is often recommended.

LGBTQ+ Travelers

Criminalized

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Algeria, punishable by up to 2 years in prison under the penal code, and there are no anti-discrimination protections; LGBTQ+ travelers should exercise significant discretion.
