Greetings. A light handshake is common; some Muslim women may not shake hands with men, so wait to see if a hand is offered.
Dress modestly at religious sites. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques and temples; headscarves and robes are often provided for women.
Use the right hand. Eat, pass items and shake hands with the right hand, as the left is considered unclean in Malay and Indian custom.
Remove shoes. Take off shoes before entering homes, mosques and some temples.
Malaysia is generally safe and not a scam-heavy destination; petty crime like snatch theft and pickpocketing in crowded areas is the main concern for tourists rather than violent crime.
Snatch theft. Thieves on foot or motorbikes grab bags and phones from pedestrians; carry bags on the side away from traffic and avoid walking while using your phone.
Taxi meter refusal / overcharging. Some taxi drivers refuse meters or overcharge tourists; use ride-hailing apps like Grab, which have fixed, trackable fares.
Fake donation collectors. People posing as monks, charity workers or child beggars may solicit money as part of organized scams; give only to registered charities.
Women travelers. Solo women travelers generally find Malaysia manageable, though harassment can occur in crowded places and on public transport; dressing modestly, especially outside KL's more liberal areas, is advised.
Criminalized
Same-sex sexual activity is illegal under both federal law (up to 20 years' imprisonment and whipping) and state Shariah enactments (caning and imprisonment); LGBTQ+ travelers should be discreet, as there is no legal protection and the government has taken an increasingly hostile stance including blocking LGBTQ+ dating apps in 2026.
